NUTLEY, NJ - A resolution was passed to honor the life of Nutley’s matriarch, the late Ruth G. Bedford, during the Tuesday, Sept. 3, Board of Commissioners public meeting. Public Safety Commissioner Alphonse Petracco was absent excused.

A moment for silence was held for the passing of Vincent Strumolo, 48, brother of Nutley Police Chief Thomas Strumolo, who died on Aug. 29, 2019; and for Rosina Cafone, 96, mother of Nutley Deputy Fire Chief Paul Cafone, who died on Aug. 28, 2019.

Resolution No, 202-19 to recognize Nutleyite Ruth G. Bedford, who died at the age of 101, on Aug. 19, 2019, was passed.

Bedford was born on April 23, 1918, and lived most her life on Highfield lane in Nutley. She was also remembered by the commissioners during the Aug. 20 BOC public meeting. See- Mayor Addresses Water Concerns, Nutley Commissioners Remember Ruth Bedford.

Bedford was the president and lifetime trustee of the Nutley Family Service Bureau, the Nutley Parkside Apartments, Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan New Jersey, and Offender Aid and Restoration of Essex County. She is also the founder of the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Scholarship. She and her late husband Stanley, a lawyer and superior court judge, hosted many events in their home including the annual Lollipop Party fundraiser which benefited the Nutley Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad and the NFSB’s September Social.

Resolution No. 213-19 was approved to amended Resolution No. 173.19 approved on July 2, 2019. This corrects the  opening time for the bids for collection, removal, disposal of solid waste, bulk waste, vegetative waste, leaves and grass clipping will be at 3 p.m. on Sept. 11 in the Commission Chambers, Nutley Township Hall, 1 Kennedy Drive.

September was declared as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month during the Board of Commissioner meeting.  The Nutley Football Alumni is holding their annual Golf for a Cure event on Monday, Sept. 30. The resolution encourages residents to rededicate themselves to the task of being prepared to face any crisis. Review emergency plans and update emergency kits.

A resolution was passed to advertise for a Request for Qualifications for a township forester, who is a New Jersey certified license tree expert. The RFQs are due at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, addressed to the Municipal Clerk, Nutley Township Hall, 1 Kennedy Drive.

The township approved the Corrective Action Plan for the audit year of 2018. A file is at the Municipal Clerk’s office and submitted to the Division of Local Government Services.

The law firm of Archer & Greiner, P.C. Attorneys at Law in Red Bank was awarded a non-fair and open contract to provide services to the Code Enforcement Department, not to exceed $16,000. The services will exceed the contract. Change Order No. 1 was granted not to exceed, $7,500.

A 60-month lease agreement was awarded for Leslie Digital Imaging, LLC (LDI Color Toolbox) in Jericho, New York for reprographic equipment. The monthly lease payment is $276 for the Department of Public Works; and $876.68 for the Department of Revenue and Finance, and includes all parts, supplies and maintenance.

Refunds of tax overpayments were granted to the owners of 129 Stager St. for $2,578.50 for the year 2017; 70 Mountainview Ave. for $3,118.83 for the year 2019; and 121 Beech St. for $2,769.63 for 2019.

Richard Mazzitelli, Ronald Marino, Meredith Donatello, and Lynda Maffucci, employees of the Department of Public Safety, were granted medical leaves of absence without pay effective Sept. 4 through Oct. 4, 2019.

The Rotary Club of Nutley was granted an off-premise 50/50 cash raffle license for Nov. 21 and an off-premise merchandise raffle license for Nov. 30.

The next Board of Commissioners meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17.
