NUTLEY, NJ - Buccos Rising Stars luggage drive fosters the spirit of reduce, reuse, recycle, while giving a lift to children in the foster care system.
Carmen Bucco, who spent time in the foster care system as a youth, knows all too well the challenges and instability children in the system face. On top of everything else, when kids move, their only "luggage" is often a trash bag provided by social services.
According to Bucco, one of his board members heard of a nurse in San Francisco who collected suitcases for foster care children who visited her hospital. A suitcase provides a sense of stability because it is "theirs" and all of their belonging can be transported and held securely.
Bucco liked the idea and asked a few friends for their old suitcases, and they told two friends, and they told two friends, and so on. In a few short weeks, Bucco reported that "the basement is filled up." He said it with the smile often seen on the face of a proud parent.
This week, arrangements are being made with Covenant House to pick up the first suitcases.
Donations of suitcases will continue. Bucco said that kids are entering the foster care system in the area every day, so the need will always be there.
Suitcases can be dropped off at Bucco's Men's Clothing store "Bucco Couture" at 218 Franklin Ave, Nutley NJ. Donors are welcome to park in his lot in behind the story, adjacent to Bosphorus, and enter the shop from the rear entrance.
