MONTCLAIR, NJ - The Northeast Earth Coalition (NEEC) honored several local individuals at the organization’s third annual Act Locally for a More Sustainable World Conference held Saturday, January 27 at the Montclair Public Library.

Local leaders who were honored were as follows: 

1. Lifetime Achievement Award: Gray Russell for his Exceptional Environmental Activism, Montclair.

2. 2018 Champion in Sustainability & Food Security: Elijah’s Promise, New Brunswick.

3. 2018 Local Business Hero: Mike Guerriero - Gelotti Ice Cream, Montclair.

4. 2018 Service for People in Need Recognition: Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless, Montclair.

5. 2018 Lifetime Achievement: Marcia Almeida for her Outstanding Community Activism, Montclair.

6. 2018 Humanitarian Award: Toni’s Kitchen for Extraordinary Work for People in Need, Montclair.

7. 2018 Lifetime Achievement: Dr. Patricia Kenschaft for Promoting Organic Local Food and Her Dedication to Environmental Causes, Montclair.

Topics discussed included local food, sustainable communities, alternative transportation, renewable energy, clean air and water, climate change and activism.

According to a release, Jose German, President of NEEC, said, “ The goal is to share ideas and inspiration to collaborate more effectively on the great project of our time – healing the earth so all life can thrive.”

NEEC is nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the work of environmental activists. The NEEC says that they seek to bring together diverse environmental organizations in the Northeast to share ideas, identify common interests and provide mutual support in building communities that are sustainable in food production, energy, transportation, and preservation of the natural environment.

“Gray’s actions and environmental commitment – a great example of the leadership, dedication, hard work, and selfless service that are core values of NEEC – have made Montclair and New Jersey more eco-friendly and sustainable,” said German on Russell's Lifetime Award. “The work he does makes a lasting contribution to our community, and is an inspiration that needs to be replicated locally and across the state.”
