JERSEY CITY, NJ -Jersey City’s Maritime Parc restaurant has been ordered closed due to alleged violations of the city’s COVID-19 protocols that came to light via a social media post.

This was the result of an apparent violation of indoor mask wearing as required by Gov. Phil Murphy’s Executive orders.

The action by the city came after a Twitter user identified as Joel Fischer, or @JFBYC1, took to the social media platform Thursday night and posted a message that appeared to taunt New York Governor Andrew Cuomo by saying “I’m at the @NYYRC with @mattgaetz. Come and get me.” @NYYRC is identified on twitter as the New York Young Republican Club while @MattGaetz represents Florida’s First Congressional District. A photo of the two men sitting within inches of each other unmasked also appeared with the tweet.

“In Jersey City we take COVID enforcement very seriously, and this event appears to be an egregious violation of the governor’s executive orders, including capacity limitations and mandatory mask wearing,” said Mayor Steven Fulop, responding to an event that occurred on Thursday. “This event blatantly disregards the protections put in place to safeguard the community from further contagion and has put Jersey City and countless others at serious risk. As we further investigate the matter, the establishment has been ordered closed until such time as they submit to the Jersey City Health and Human Services Department a written operational plan describing how they’re going to comply with capacity mandates and mask wearing, and the plan will be subsequently reviewed by the city and approved.”

The restaurant received the notice from the City’s Department of Environmental Health saying it will remain closed until the establishment submits a written operational plan on how it intends to comply to COVID-19 health requirements.

Sharing his sentiments about the gathering was Governor Phil Murphy who, referring to the Young Republican’s gathering, said on Twitter that “it is beyond the pale that anyone would willingly endanger people in another state.” Murphy went on to refer to Representative Gaetz as a “putz” and a “fool” and concluding “frankly, I don’t ever want you back in this state.”
