DUMONT, NJ - A Nutley man was arrested and charged over the weekend following a motor vehicle crash in Dumont, in Bergen County.
According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, officers from the Dumont Police Department responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash at 3:06 a.m. at the intersection of West Madison Avenue and Dance Boulevard on Saturday Oct. 19. A 2017 Ford Explorer, with severe front end damage was engulfed in flames at the scene. A 2012 Volkswagen Jetta was off the road with severe driver's side damage.
The driver of the Explorer, 25 year old Nicholas J. Meehan, was outside of the vehicle. He had suffered minor injuries. The 19 year old female driver of the Jetta was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center with serious injuries. She is reported to be in stable condition.
The investigation into the crash, conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti and the Dumont Police Department under the direction of Chief Michael J. Conner, resulted in charges being filed against Meehan. He is scheduled to make his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in
Hackensack, NJ on Oct. 30, 2019. He was charged with one count of Assault By Auto, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1c(3), a 2nd degree crime; Driving While Intoxicated, in violation of N.J.S.A. 39:4-50; and Reckless Driving, in violation of N.J.S.A. 39:4-96
Prosecutor Musella stated that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable
doubt. He also thanked the Dumont Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
