NUTLEY, NJ - The Nutley Police Department is alerting residents about a new phone scam in which the caller claims they have a family member with them and intend to harm them. This is a scam.

According to police, the caller claims they are a "cartel," and advises the intended victim to "not call the Police or block the caller." The caller then goes on to tell their target that they have their family members and will harm them if money is not sent. 

Nutley police advise that this is a scam.

Police advise that recipients of these calls are not to provide any personal information, bank information, purchase pre-paid credit cards. In some cases iTunes and eBay prepaid cards are requested. 

The Nutley Police Department advises that individuals who receive these calls should call or notify police immediately.
