Nutley Police Director Alphonse Petracco and Chief Thomas Strumolo are advising Nutley Residents of phone scams taking place. Police have received a number of calls in which unsuspecting residents received calls from criminals posing as reputable company agents. The latest is a call that tells the recipient that they are renewing their Amazon Prime Membership, and request that you press #1 on your keypad. Calls to Amazon confirmed that this was not their company and potentially a fraud attempt.
Chief Strumolo advises that there are applications that allow the criminals to put any phone number they wish, to appear on your caller ID hoping you believe it is actually a reputable company, including using the police departments name and number.
Please do not provide any personal information, or advance to additional websites or voice prompts, any concerns you have, please record the number and check with a family member or police before furthering any conversation that requests information or offers instruction. Additionally, scammers are at large on social media sites, please do not send gift cards, or provide them with personal information.
