BELMAR, NJ — With a blink of an eye, summer is over.

Although the sun has made a grand return, a week of rainy, dreary weather — and a turbulent surf brought on by storms elsewhere — prompted the borough to begin preparing the beachfront for the winter.

“… and all at once, summer collapsed into fall.”  – Oscar Wilde

That means dunes have been moved into place on the southern end of the 1.3-mile beachfront to protect it from storm erosion, In addition, all beach lockers have been removed, and the beachfront and marina bathrooms have been closed.

Although Belmar’s official beach season is over and lifeguards are off duty, a skeleton staff of lifeguards is patrolling the oceanfront in utility vehicles today to deal with any situations that may arise, said Belmar lifeguard director Eric Kerecman.

“Currently ocean conditions are not conducive for bathing. As with past days, we're experiencing bad water today, hence red flags. The only people that we're allowing in our surfers and boogie boarders with fins,” he added.

There is a high risk for the formation of dangerous and life-threatening rip currents through at least today, according to the National Weather Service. Looking to the week ahead, the remnants of Hurricane Florence are expected to bring heavy rain by Tuesday, September 18.

It took so long for summer to get here, and now it’s gone. Let fall begin so that we can look forward to another season in the sun.
