NUTLEY, NJ – Nutley High School and Montclair State University graduate Michael C. Russonella, D.O., was recently appointed as a boxing physician with the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board.
The Athletic Control Board regulates all contests and exhibitions of unarmed combat within the state, including licensure and supervision of promoters, boxers, kickboxers, mixed martial arts fighters, seconds, ring officials, managers, and matchmakers.
Dr. Russonella, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with over two decades of experience, founded North Jersey Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Institute (NJOSMI) in 2009, with office locations on Franklin Avenue in Nutley, and Broad Street in Clifton.
Whether it’s performing arthroscopic knee surgery in the operating room, or tending to sprains on the football field, Dr. Russonella brings to the control board a high-performing standard of skill and knowledge in caring for and treating athletes.
“Being a boxing physician for the State of New Jersey is a privilege, and I am honored to serve under Commissioner Larry Hazzard to make sure these superior athletes remain in top condition,” said Russonella. “I’m excited to help protect the safety and well-being of participants and promote public confidence and trust in the regulatory process and conduct of combative sports.”
His familiarity with cutting edge surgical and non-surgical treatments ensure all his patients receive the care they need, no matter the source of their discomfort.
Dr. Russonella completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the North Shore-LIJ Health System in New York and went on to complete his Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at the prestigious American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama.
Dr. Russonella and NJOSMI are affiliated or contracted with many scholastic athletic programs in Northern New Jersey, including Nutley Junior Football and Lacrosse, Clifton Junior Football, Bloomfield Junior Football, Passaic High School Football, Shabazz High School Football in Newark, West Side High School Football in Newark, Barringer High School Football in Newark, and Memorial High School Football in West New York.
NJOSMI supports Phil Simms North-South High School Football Classic, Paul Robeson All-Star Football Classic, Bloomfield Football Alumni Camp, Nutley Recreation Softball and Nutley American Little League.
Dr. Russonella hosts periodic Sports Symposiums for high school coaches, athletic directors, and certified athletic trainers. He also cares for the competitors at Enforcer Fitness Boxing and IWF Wrestling.
NJOSMI is a member of Nutley Chamber of Commerce and North Jersey Chamber of Commerce.
