NUTLEY, NJ - When news of Nutley High School Head Football Coach Steven DiGregorio's cancer diagnosis broke earlier this month, it did not take long for Raider Nation, and the extended Nutley community, to respond with an outpouring of support.
Earlier this season, TAPinto Nutley reported that a fundraiser, spearheaded by Nutley High School Athletic Director Joe Piro, was scheduled for Nov. 14 at the Nutley Elks Club. Come on Raider Nation, Let's Show Nutley Coach D What We're Made Of As He Battles Cancer.
According to Piro, response to the announcement has been better than expected. People are purchasing tickets to the $65 fundraiser, but they are also sending in donations. "Knowing this town, the number of people making donations to support Digger really shouldn't surprise me, but it has." Digger is DiGregorio's nickname.
DiGregorio returned to the role as the Raiders head football coach in the 2017-2018 season. Raiders fans will remember that he was the head football coach from 2004 to 2011. DiGregorio replaced Coach Tom Basile.
At the time of his return, Piro said, “He was a role model for our student athletes and a mentor to our staff during his first tenure as coach. I look forward to watching him pick-up where he left off. The Raider Nation is excited to have him back. In the time since his return, DiGregoio has not only inspired on the field, but inspired students to take a deep interest in American History in the classroom.
DiGregorio has held coaching positions at Princeton High School, Paramus Catholic High School, Princeton University, Allegheny College, Paul VI High School, and James Caldwell High School.
DiGregorio has his Bachelor’s degree from Muhlenberg College and is a 1979 graduate of Nutley High School. He currently lives in Princeton with his wife and three sons.
Homecoming Saturday was declared "Coach D Day" by the Nutley Board of Commissioners, and, no surprise here, the Nutley Raiders won the homecoming game. Nutley Football With a Big Gridiron Win on Coach D Day
