PARAMUS, N.J. — In recognition of Giving Tuesday, the student government association at Bergen Community College held a soup drive during the week of December 3.
Held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday is a movement that creates an international day of charitable giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season.
Students, faculty and staff donated 187 cans of soup to its Center for Food Action pantry at the Paramus Road College. The idea for the drive was prompted by Temple University and Wilsconsin Hope Lab's research that estimate 42% of community college students face "food insecurity" or a lack of access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.
The quantity of soup cans collected reportedly topped the previous year's donations.
“I am very proud of the students who exceeded last year’s soup can donations,” said Joli Nelson, student life club coordinator.
