PARAMUS, N.J. -- Borough Police have temporarily shut down the right lane and shoulder in the area of Linwood Avenue near the McDonald's Restaurant on Route 17 North due to a water main break that occurred after midnight last night.

Suez Water crews were on the scene last night. It is unclear how many customers were affected by the break.

Paramus police estimate the break will be repaired by about 1 p.m. today; traffic delays are expected.

According to, temperature changes were cited as the top reason for water main breaks as "cold temperatures cause pipes to become brittle" and "slight changes in air or water temperature can dramatically increase stress on a pipe." Temperatures dipped into the 20s last night.
