PARKLAND, FL- Parkland's 2003 Girls Team, the Parkland Red U16's, capped off a strong yet emotional Weston Cup soccer tournament with a 1-0 victory over the Sunrise Sting to win the Championship this past weekend. The 2003 Parkland Red team has had significant success on the field, but the loss of Alyssa Aldaheff one year ago united the team more than anyone would have imagined.

"This team has been through a lot of adversity and struggles through the memory of and playing for Alyssa. Success means more to this team than to most (teams)," said Director of Travel Division and Team Manager Alfredo Alvarado.

Prior to the start of the Weston Cup, Florida's largest youth soccer tournament, the Parkland coach, Roger Thomas and team dedicated their performance in Weston to Alyssa. After getting past the group stage, the Parkland girls met the Sunrise Sting in the final. Parkland, who hadn't given up a goal all tournament, finished with another clean sheet in the final and got the one goal it needed to win from Cailey Katz. Other team members include: Raquel Alvarado, Grace Keane, Jordan King, Madison Micioni, Maria Miranda, Juliana Penaflor, Alexis Porro, Emma Ramsingh, Madison Rivard, Hannah Shay, Lizzie Sheehy, Harlee Shoaff, Bailey Sweginnis, Kaley Tanis, Ireland Thigpen, Ava Trachtenberg, and Pietra Zolla.

"This team has been through a lot together," said Rec. Technical Director & Director of Girls Travel, Laurie Thomas. "For the club as a whole, the tournament was about more than just results. It was for Alyssa, our hardworking, fun leader. Alyssa was the inspiration for all the teams. She was the 12th player on the field."

The ultimate goal on the field for this team would be to win the Florida State Cup, a statewide playoff with hundreds of teams entered and only one champion. The State Cup begins in March and finishes in April. Last year, the 2003 Parkland Girls Red team advanced all the way to the Round of 16. This year, they hope to advance even closer to the title.
