PARKLAND, FLA. – The Children’s Bereavement Center (CBC) is coming to Heron Heights Elementary School, launching six groups, targeted to specific ages, starting on Monday, Aug. 13. The CBC serves children, parents, families and friends who are impacted by loss and is running separate groups to serve teachers and school personnel to afford them the confidentiality they require.
The CBC is launching a website in Parkland with services provided free to participants. The Parkland site will become the CBC’s sixth full family site, the second in Broward County All sites meet one evening per week, offering a pizza dinner prior to group meetings.
“Our mission is to empower children, young adults, and their families adjust to life after the loss of a loved one within a supportive community of their peers, and to promote healthful grief, healing and growth,” Mindy Cassel, co-founder and former CEO of the bereavement center, said.
“The Children’s Bereavement Center is in our twentieth year of providing a proven, comprehensive model of grief peer support to children. We have 10 sights throughout Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties.”
The Parkland site will begin with six groups formed by developmental age: early elementary (4-5 years and older), middle school, high school, parent/caregiver group and a teacher/school personnel group for adults.
“We may add groups as needed. Each group is facilitated by a team trained in the CBC Healthful Grieving Model, with a master’s level lead facilitator in each group (3:1 ratio),” Cassel said. “We also provide music and art grief specialists to work with the children.”
“There is no quick fix for the trauma and loss that the people of Parkland and Coral Springs have endured. The Children’s Bereavement Center allows children, parents and educators who attend to gain perspective over time, supporting and learning from one another and utilizing their strengths in the process. The group is a powerful medium for growth,” said Cassel.
Participants, whether families or individuals, may attend as long as they wish. New participants are added weekly. To register families contact us by phone: 888-988-5438 or visit
