PARKLAND, FL - Relay for Life of Parkland and Coral Springs raised more than $75,000 to fight cancer this weekend.  Rachel Frydman, Event Co-Lead, and Kendra Walsh, Event Co-Lead, said, "The money raised will enable the American Cancer Society to help people fighting cancer with the programs and support they need, finding cancer’s causes and cures through groundbreaking research, and ensuring access to screening and treatment for everyone."

Frydman and Walsh said, "Cancer has touched all of us -- including family, friends, current and former colleagues -- in some way.  And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We hold Relay For Life of Parkland and Coral Springs to honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others."

"This year, we did our best to honor our Marjory Stoneman Douglas survivors, first responders, and those lost in the recent tragedy. At Relay For Life, we wanted to show how the community has come together, by celebrating survivorship, and having a fun and inspirational time," they said.

Payton Francis, a student at Westglades Middle School, performed at Relay for Life.  She said, "I was honored to sing my song at Relay for Life.  My song is called “Strong,” which Is about my feelings following the shooting at Stoneman Douglas.  I hope people going through any type of hard time can relate to it.  I also got to meet Emma Gonzalez who is a huge inspiration to me!"  She said, "I was singing for my cousin, Maggie, who died from cancer, as well as all of the victims and survivors of the Stoneman Douglas shooting."

Fryman and Walsh said, "It was incredible to bring the community together and show how strong we could be. We’ve estimated that 1,000 people may have attended the event. Once our tally is finalized, we expect to exceed $80,000 raised in support of the American Cancer Society."
