Parkland, FL- The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life fundraiser is national in scope, but it also continues to impact and support our local Parkland community as well. Team Miralago, started by Rachel Frydman four years ago and is led currently by team captains Briana Cabrera, Karen Johnson, Jessica Fox, and Crystal Moore.
"I started the team in October of 2015 as I had lost an aunt to cancer and my best friend had just completed her last treatment for breast cancer. It was time to do something," shared Frydman. After reaching out to the community to share the idea, Frydman found a handful of team members for the first year and the fundraising began. "We had about 4-5 active team members the first year and raised about $8500 with car washes, garage sales, and other small events."
Team Miralago's participation and contribution to Relay for Life has increased each of the past four years. The team has a dozen members that fundraise for several months each year. This year Team Miralago donated over $25,000 to the cause and was the top fundraising team of the Relay for Life of Parkland and Coral Springs.
"The best part for me is in building relationships with neighbors that have become family. Volunteering and fundraising is a lot of work but we've grown close in the process and have been able to have a lot of fun while making a big impact," added team leader Briana Cabrera. "It has also allowed me the opportunity to be a good role model for my son and to teach him the importance of charity. Being part of the Relay for Life event each year is an emotional experience that makes all of our hard work worthwhile."
The Relay for LIfe of Parkland and Coral Springs event took place on April 6, and planning is already in the works for next year. For more information on about the American Cancer Society and how to join Relay for Life, please visit Relay For Life | Cancer Walk | Cancer Fundraising Events
