PARKLAND, FL- Residents of Parkland have been organizing an effort to donate meals to the tireless workers battling COVID-19 at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale. Bridgette Zaragoza is a nurse at Holy Cross and has been working almost constantly since the onslaught of the Coronavirus pandemic. Local volunteers Jen Caronna, Sabrina Cozzolino and Carolyn Redmond have been making themselves available to help out in any way possible, and the idea of supporting local business while providing healthcare workers with meals arose.
"Heather (Khalil) asked for a volunteer to lead the efforts and Sabrina Cozzolino and I volunteered to do it," said Caronna. "I know how frightening it can be for the staff to bring that virus home to their families, but I also know for them to be in healthcare their patients are so important to them too. We didn’t hesitate, if we can show our gratitude with lunch and dinner Sabrina and I were all in."
Thus far, the team has donated 150 meals to the staff at Holy Cross, all from local donations by Parkland residents. They've brought food from Pizza Time Caffe, Deja Blue, BC Taco, Press and Grind and Subway on Atlantic Blvd. owned by Parkland resident Lisa Schettetino.
"I organize the meals with coordinator Kim Saiswick at Holy Cross," added Caronna. "She is fantastic and gets the meals to different departments so all staff members can feel the love of the community. The community members donate to Sabrina and I. We coordinate the meals and the restaurants deliver the meals. They are the ones who really make this work! It definitely takes many generous hearts to make it work."
