PARKLAND, FL- As the calendar turns to June, Florida enters hurricane season. Expenses can add up quickly when preparing for a diaster. Qualifying items related to disaster preparedness are exempt from sales tax this coming weekend, Friday, May 29, 2020, through Thursday, June 4, 2020.

The 2020 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday was passed by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis. The Sales Tax Holiday identifies a specific set of items to be purchased without sales tax. 

The following are included on the tax exempt list for the 2020 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday:

  • Reusable ice packs, coolers and ice chests
  • Any portable, self-powered light source (lanterns, flashlights)
  • Batteries (AAA-cell, AA-cell, C-cell, D-cell, 6-volt, 9-volt)
  • Bungee cords, ground anchor systems, ratchet straps, tie-down kits
  • Radios (powered by battery, solar, or handcrank), two-way, weather band 
  • Tarpaulins (tarps), visqueen, plastic sheeting, plastic drop cloths, and other flexible waterproof sheeting
  • Portable generators
