PARKLAND, FL- Parkland resident Heather Chapman didn't intend to be an activist for gun safety. The events of February 14, 2018 changed everything. Chapman's two children were in their junior year at Stoneman Douglas and seventh grade year at Westglades at the time of the shooting. From that day forward, she has been determined to help with gun safety in our country and helping children heal from the school tragedy. In the aftermath of February 14, Chapman's aunt suggested they attend a Moms Demand Action meeting in Plantation. Wearing her MSD shirt to show support, Moms Demand Action leaders handed Chapman a microphone to speak at the meeting; her involvement in the organization and its mission grew from there.

Chapman now serves as the leader of the Parkland chapter of Moms Demand Action. "Our group is about safe gun ownership. Not gun control," she says. The organization works at educating the public on safe gun ownership and advocates for gun safety laws. They are often at local events handing out gun locks to people and sharing important gun safety information. The Parkland Chapter meets monthly at various locations.

"Our community is phenomenal. Most people joined Moms Demand Action because of our tragedy," Chapman stated. "We went from 70,000 leaders across the state to 300,000 leaders. The Fort Lauderdale/Parkland group is the largest in the country."

Moms Demand Action was holding their annual conference in Washington, D.C. during the tragic shootings in El Paso and Dayton. Their grief spear headed a vigil held at the White House to honor the victims. The vigil turned into a march to the National Capital for gun safety.

This upcoming weekend, August 17 and 18, Moms Demand Action will hold "Recess Rallies" across the country to demand action from the U.S. Senate on addressing gun violence. The rally is to demand the action of passing background checks on all gun sales and a strong Red Flag law.

The Fort Lauderdale/ Parkland/ Palm Beach Recess Rally will be held on Saturday, August 17 at 11:00 a.m. at the War Memorial Auditorium, 800 NE 8th Street, Fort Lauderdale.
