PARKLAND, FL- In a news conference held this afternoon at the BSO headquarters in Fort Lauderdale surrounded by the victims’ parents, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced the suspension of Broward Sheriff Scott Israel. “The massacre might never have happened had Broward had better leadership in the Sheriff’s Department,” stated Governor DeSantis during the news conference. Governor Desantis announced Gregory Tony as the new Broward Sheriff.
Many parents of the victims and community members have been calling for Israel’s resignation for months. Today’s suspension offers accountability for the failures of the BSO response on February 14 and offers hope for the future. “Scott Israel’s removal today is a huge step to cleaning up BSO’s many failures that lead to the death of my daughter, Alyssa Alhadeff. Greg Tony will make sure his officers are properly trained in active shooter and will hold his deputies accountable! Sheriff Tony’s collaboration with Broward County Public Schools will help make our schools safer,” stated Lori Alhadeff.
