PARKLAND, FL- Many locals will begin observing and celebrating Hanukkah this evening. The Jewish 8-day holiday begins at sundown on Sunday, December 22, and lasts until sundown on Monday, December 30.
The Hanukkah celebration recognizes the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greek army between 200 and 150 B.C. The victory led to a miracle during the rededicating of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and restoring of its menorah, or lamp. The miracle is that only one vial of oil was found with just enough oil to illuminate the Temple lamp for one day of celebration, and yet the oil lasted for eight full days.
Chabad of Parkland will be hosting a Friday night dinner in celebration of Hanukkah, with a service at 6 p.m. and dinner following at 6:30 p.m.
Chabad of West Parkland will also be hosting a Community Shabbat Dinner celebrating Shabbat and Hanukkah at the Parkland Golf & Country Clubhouse. They will have a 5 p.m. Menorah lighting and prayer followed by dinner at 6 p.m.
