Recreational softball for girls is finally making its way to Parkland. Historically one of the two most popular sports in the United States for female participation, Parkland Recreational Softball will begin this coming spring for girls ages 5-16 years.
For many Parklanders this development not only fills a void, but also builds community. In recent years, parents were needing to travel to neighboring cities to give their daughter the opportunity to play. An active group of parents decided to organize and get a program started here in Parkland. “We wanted to create a fun, exciting program where girls in the city could meet other girls and learn the sport of softball,” stated Meena Hierholzer, one of the founding parents.
Parkland Recreational Softball is open to girls of all skill levels between the ages of 5 and 16. In this inaugural season they hope to start with two teams in each age division and grow from there. Registration is now open for the 2019 season. They are also offering a free clinic with the Stoneman Douglas Lady Eagles softball team on Wednesday, December 5, 6-7:30 at Terramar Park. Parkland Youth Softball Association is also looking for sponsors for the development of the league. For more information and to register please visit, www.parklandsoftball.org.
