PARKLAND, FL- The 3rd Annual Run 4 Beigel fundraiser event will be held Saturday, February 1, 2020. The Run 4 Beigel 5K was created by members of the Stoneman Douglas cross country team to honor their former coach, Scott Beigel. Beigel, a geography teacher as well as cross country coach, lost his life saving others during the February 14, 2018 shooting at MSD.
Registration closes at 12:00 p.m. EST January 31 for the 5K Run/ Walk. The event begins at 8:00 a.m. at Pine Trails Park in Parkland, FL. Participants can pick up packets at Runner's Depot (Coral Springs location) on January 29 and 30 from 12:00-6:00 p.m. Sign-ups and packet pickup will also be available on the day of the race starting at 7:00 a.m. by the Amphitheater area at Pine Trails Park. The first 400 participants at packet pickup will receive free race t-shirts.
"Our Coach radiated positivity and helped us develop confidence into our ability as runners. He was always there for us as both a coach and a friend," said student and race co-coordinator Annagrace Myers. "He dealt with our personal struggles along with our athletic struggles and always kept our heads in the right places. Coach Beigel was there for everyone, whether it was to provide a good laugh or a pat on the back after a race."
The Run 4 Beigel is a 5k run/walk that raises funds to support the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund. 100% of the proceeds will support and allow underprivileged children affected by gun violence to attend summer camp. Beigel was a camp counselor in New York for many years prior to his time teaching and coaching at Stoneman Douglas.
"We hope that Run 4 Beigel can help the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund go above and beyond its mission," added co-coordinator Monique Miquel. "We also want the race to be a memorable event that encompasses the same positivity, growth, and camaraderie that Coach Beigel brought to our team."
