COVID-19: Airlines and Online Travel Agencies (OTA’s) Say, “Don’t Call Us” as Travel Agents Come to the Rescue

Contributor Doug Gollan comments below, who writes about private aviation and the business of luxury travel.

While airlines, hotel companies, and online travel agencies (OTAs) are telling customers, “Don’t call us, we can’t handle the volume of calls,” and in some cases disconnecting callers after hours on hold, consumers who use traditional travel agents are not only getting advice. They’re getting rescued. They are getting rebooked. They’re getting home. And in some cases, they’re even getting a shoulder to lean on, and a bit of daydreaming, chatting about where they want to go after COVID-19 Coronavirus crisis recedes.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF VIRUSES?

COVID-19 is the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. Coronavirus is a family of viruses that includes SARS and MERS.

The flu is also caused by viruses, but the novel coronavirus is not the flu. There are many types of flus. Different strains of what’s known as the H1N1 virus have caused some particularly lethal pandemics, including the 2009 swine flu and 1918 pandemic flu, commonly referred to as the Spanish flu.

There are many types of other viruses that you have probably heard of, notably hantavirus and HIV. Some diseases caused by viruses include chickenpox, Ebola, polio, and smallpox. Seasonal flus and, yes, the common cold are viral infections, too.

What we are experiencing can be frightening and is uncharted waters.  This is a silent attacker the one you do not feel until it strikes.  Jobs lost, deaths, stress, and fear are just some emotions we experience.  No to mention people and families who just realized how much time they really do spent outside of their homes.  Image for a moment you are married with no children.  Now you are 24/7 with your spouse, uhm?  Or now you are 24/7 with your spouse and several children with energy off the charts. This can be a challenge.  The point is we are all more active than we realized until we have been either self-quarantined or mandated to stay home.

THE WRONG WAY TO FEAR THE PANDEMIC

Merriam-Webster defines fear as “an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger.”

This is the kind of fear that prompts hoarding of toilet paper and other supplies. It causes us to fall for scams and fake Covid-19 cures.  It provokes anxiety that is physically debilitating, leading to panic attacks, headaches, breathing problems, fatigue and depression.

Such fears seem more widespread today than in many years, in large part because we are facing an enemy unlike any we have faced in my lifetime.

THE NEWS WE ARE WAITING FOR…

Of course, is the announcement that scientists have discovered a vaccine or cure for the coronavirus.  We trust that day will come one day.  When it does, as with crises in the past, we will remember then what people are doing now.  From the president and members of Congress to our state and local leaders and those we know personally, actions taken (or not taken) today will echo for many years to come.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

As a result, this day is the best day to decide how we want to be remembered when the pandemic is over.  What can you and I do in these days that would be the most memorable long after the pandemic is over?

THE SOLUTION WHAT I AM DOING?

During these challenging times of uncertainty and social distancing I have been busy assisting guests to make sure their travel investments are not lost. I want you to know I am here for you too.

Many have told me they booked online and cannot get help or must wait hours and hours.  Still others found out vendors like BookIt.com have paused normal operations leaving them out to dry.  Expedia had stopped answering its phones and/or had very long hold times.  Others have booked with membership organizations such as Costco and have had hours of hold times trying to get help.  Plus, each time when they called, they had to reexplained their situation to the next person who answered the call. This is not the case with my clients.

What we are all experiencing is new territory.  It's frightening and uncharted.  What I can offer without a doubt is an abundance of free help, knowledge and lots of experience. Drop me an email or call and leave me a voice message me, I'm all ears- let me know what I can do to support, really...I want to hear from you!

I can give support and help you with:

  • Insurance questions
  • Cancellations
  • Refunds
  • Future travel credits
  • Future travel
  • Rebooking
  • Or any travel related concerns

As I mentioned earlier, we move about more than we realize and when this situation calms people just like you will want more than ever to get out and travel. The vendors will no doubt be starving for income and offer some very enticing promotions.

SO, HOW CAN I SUPPORT YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW RIGHT NOW? And thanks for letting me try!
