RANDOLPH, NJ -- County College of Morris (CCM) is conducting its Fall Open House on Oct 14, an event that will show prospective students that the 2-year college should not be seen as a "second choice," said the college’s admissions director.

The open house is for high school students and their parents, for college students thinking about transferring and for adults interested in returning to school. It will take place in the Student Community Center on CCM’s Randolph campus at 214 Center Grove Road.

Two sessions will be offered; at 10 a.m. and at 11:30 a.m. Those who attend and apply for admission will have the $30 application fee waived.

CCM Admissions Director Gene Soltys said the college hosts the popular open houses twice yearly.

“The feature of the open house is for students to meet professors and understand the academic offerings but also the quality we have,” Soltys said. “There’s a lot of misconception that a community college should be a second choice but County College of Morris happens to be an excellent first choice for students.”

Soltys said CCM’s quality of education “is as good as, and some would say better than, the first two years of a 4-year school because that’s all we do.” He said graduates often return, after completing bachelor degrees elsewhere, and tell CCM staff that they were better teachers than many at the 4-year college they attended.

CCM’s open houses are usually well-attended, Soltys said. “We usually have a full auditorium,” he said. “We fill the house, typically. We have an excellent showing. That’s why we have two sessions per day.”

The first thing that happens when people come to an open house is a welcoming session. Then the attendees are asked to pick their first academic field choice – the part of the session where they get to meet teachers.

“After that there is an open session,” Soltys said. “There are a series of student service tables in a very large room so students can ask questions about student clubs, tutoring and financial aid ... There are at least five counselors there.”

A special breakout session also will be offered for adults looking to take continuing education courses, earn a certificate or work on an associate degree.

CCM now costs $154 per credit for county residents, less than $5,000 per year,” Soltys noted.

CCM, a TAPinto.net sponsor, offers more than 50 associate degrees, certificates and certifications programs and has in place more than 85 transfer agreements for those who wish to also earn a bachelor’s degree.

Registration is required for the Open House and can be completed online at www.ccm.edu/oh. Registrants are asked to select the session they want to attend.

Open house visitors can park in Lots 6 or 7 (a campus map can be found at www.ccm.edu/fullsize.html). For more information on the college and its academic programs, go to www.ccm.edu/academics/.
