ROXBURY, NJ - Layups 4 Life is coming to Parsippany! For the first time since its inception in 2014 by a Roxbury High School graduate, the popular Layups 4 Life 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament will not take place in Roxbury in 2018.
Tournament founder Dan Exter has moved the event to the Parsippany PAL Youth Center, a venue that offers more room than the Roxbury High School gymnasium. The departure from Roxbury is not exactly a surprise; in May, Exter told TAPinto Roxbury that the tournament - which raises money to fight cancer - had grown to the point he needed to find a bigger site.
The 2017 tournament attracted 43 teams and raised more than $30,000 for cancer research and clinical trials at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the facility that Exter credits with saving his life after he was diagnosed with leukemia in 2013.
The 2018 installment of the tournament will take place April 28. Registration will open on Jan. 4 and can be done online at www.layups4life.org.
The Parsippany PAL Youth Center is at 33 Baldwin Road in Parsippany.
In the tournament, anyone 13 or older can play and co-ed teams are welcome, according to Exter. Teams are placed into similar age and skill-set divisions and are guaranteed five games. The top teams from each division move on to a single-elimination championship bracket.
The cost will be $32 per player with a maximum of four players per team. A raffle and silent auction will be part of the event as well as music and food.
