MORRIS PLAINS, NJ - At approximately 6:35 p.m. last night, the United States Geological Survey reports that there was a 1.7 magnitude earthquake about 1.24 miles SSW of Morristown. Earthquakes that small typically aren't felt, but the shallowness (just five feet below the surface) made it perceptible to residents. People had reported hearing a loud boom, and some people say they felt their houses shake.

Currently there are no reports of injuries or damage.

It was not New Jersey’s first earthquake in the last year. A 1.3 magnitude quake was registered in March. It shook Morris Plains.

There were several small earthquakes across the New Jersey area in recent years: a 1.1 magnitude March of 2015 quake in Clifton; a 1 magnitude quake in July of 2015 in Wanaque; a 1.2 magnitude quake in August of 2015 in Fairfield; a 2.6 magnitude quake in August of 2015 in Bernardsville; a 2.1 magnitude January of 2016 quake in Ringwood and a 1.1 magnitude quake in July of 2016 in Kinnelon.

To Our Current and Future Representatives - Wherever They May Be:

We can never forget we are a nation of immigrants.

We cannot fall prey to fear, ignorance and anger when we  have been historically driven by freedom and justice.

We must have the courage and will to fight hate, bigotry and prejudice.

We must not wake up to what we hoped was a bad dream and ...
