NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – A bit of Broadway is coming to George Street, and to paraphrase a title of a “Hamilton” tune, it’s not going to be so quiet downtown.

The stage is set for performances from “Wicked,” “Jersey Boys,” “Phantom of the Opera” “Mamma Mia” and other famous musicals to ring out in the afternoon air starting Saturday.

The revue-style show is the idea of Matthew Ferguson, director of operations at Tavern on George.

Broadway on George will tap the talent of seven New Jersey performers and pair them with a three-piece band for a lunch-and-show special at the restaurant, which is situated in the shadow of the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center and what has been known as the city’s theater district

“There's outdoor dining, there’s outdoor music, but there really hasn't been a lot of outdoor theater,” he said. “And it's obviously for a good reason, because it's a lot more complicated. But it's the one thing we're just missing. And, even going into winter, we're not sure what the future is. And we said, ‘Hey, let’s bring some theater to the outdoor arena as well.’”

Ferguson said a stage will be set up outside the restaurant for shows at noon and 2 p.m. each Saturday in October.

Dan Robertson, Jessa Bedser, Rachelle Legrand, Randy Campo, Rebecca Madeira, Steph Turci and Tyler Conroy have been rehearsing tunes from “Cabaret,” “Frozen,” “Grease,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Oklahoma,” “Les Misérables,” “The Producers,” “Rent” and more.

They will be backed by Emmanuel Solano on drums, Greg Salmon on bass and Liam McGeary on piano and conducting.

“There will be some definitely some movement around the space, but there's not an elaborate set,” Ferguson said. “So, we’re covering songs from over 20 musicals, some in full length, some in sort of some medleys. It’s really more of kind of a mash-up style presentation of show tunes.”

Audience members, who will seated socially distant, will have three seating choices.
