Blue Lives Matter was never about protecting police officers’ lives.

It started as a reaction to Black Lives Matter where it was wrongly perceived as an ‘anti-police’ movement rather than a movement critical of institutionalized racism.

In my area and on social media following the events in Ferguson, I’ve seen more symbolism and posts supporting law enforcement than anything critical about the institution. This was wrong and implicitly allowed the black community to face more police brutality.

You may know or be a member of law enforcement, but the continual praise will not incentivize police departments to ‘reform’ themselves.

Police officers taking a knee with protesters does not solve racism. Police officers restraining their peers from brutalizing protesters is not a sustainable solution.

Police departments addressing their issues and providing meaningful reform (such as immediate firing for killing unarmed people) is a step in the right direction.
