Candlelight Gathering for Peace and Solidarity with Charlottesville at Brookdale Park

BLOOMFIELD/MONTCLAIR, NJ - About 400 people gathered Sunday evening in Essex County Brookdale Park in a vigil peace and solidarity with Charlottesvillle, Va. after the domestic terrorist attack on Saturday. 

Men and women, young and old, families and single people, arrived at the archery fields by car, on foot, by bike, and with dogs in tow around 7 p.m. to come together as  one people in solidarity with the Charlottesville victims and their families. Differences in age, gender, color, creed, and religion fell by the wayside as the groups joined in song in including 'This Land Is Your Land." 

Community leaders and clergy spoke to the assembled citizens,but the evening was primarily about the citizens, not he leaders of the vigil. The 90 minute vigil started as the sun was still illuminating the park, and ended as darkness fell and the hundreds of candles illuminated the faces of people who arrived as strangers but left with a sense of kinship.

The event was organized in about 24 hours.
