WAYNE, NJ - The Wayne Township Planning Board last week approved a 12-theatre, 44,000-square foot Cinemark movie theater. It is expected to open by 2019.
The theater will be built where Sears Auto Center is currently located, off Willowbrook Boulevard. The application noted that Seritage SRC Finance will raze the auto center to build the new cinema.
The theater will have ceiling-to-floor screens and a state-of-the-art XD digital sound system, according to planning board testimony. It will also have Cinemark's signature "luxury lounger" chairs, which are electric, oversize chairs.
As to whether there were concerns by the Wayne Planning Board as to the amount of parking in the area, "the area where the theater will be built has more than adequate parking spaces available," said Wayne Mayor Chris Vergano. "The building is replacing the former Sears auto store and is located separately from the main mail building."
Cinemark Theater will join Dave & Busters as the newest tenants at the mall. Dave & Busters, a full-service restaurant, bar and video gaming facility, is currently under construction across the lot from where the movie theater will be. Vergano said that Dave & Busters is planning to open some time in January 2018.
Headquartered in Plano, Texas, Cinemark Holdings, Inc. has 337 theaters and 4,544 screens in 41 states. In New Jersey it has theaters in Hazlet and Somerdale. It plans to open 16 new locations over the coming year. In addition to Wayne, a location is planned for Watchung.
