MONTCLAIR, NJ - A food distribution event was held in Montclair on Thursday. 

According to Essex County officials, 1100 boxes of food were given to families in need.

Held at the Charles H. Bullock School in Montclair, the event is designed to help families who were negatively impacted by coronavirus. The boxes of food that will be distributed are meant to benefit families who have been forced out of work and are not able to afford food.

Many Montclair leaders were also in attendance providing support including Mayor Robert Jackson, President of MNDC (Montclair Neighborhood Development Corporation), Freeholder President Brendan Gill, Police Chief Todd Conforti, Deputy Chief Will Young, Montclair Township Manager Tim Stafford, Eureka Lodge, Anibal Ramos and many others.

Eureka Masonic Lodge is located in Montclair, NJ and has assisted many volunteer efforts in the community, President Dennis Crawley said.

The emergency food boxes contained enough food to provide about 40 meals and consisted of a variety of non-perishable food such as oatmeal, rice, fruit, peanut butter, jelly, shelf stable milk and canned vegetables, chili, soup and ravioli. Items may vary based upon their availability.

Volunteers also delivered food to nearly 50 homebound residents, Essex County Spokesman Anthony Puglise said.

He said, "This was the fourth distribution event we've had and through these events we have distributed 5,200 boxes. However, in addition to this program, our various agencies deliver about 2,000 meals per day through our Meals on Wheels and Café in the Park program (which was transitioned from a lunch site in our parks to home delivered meals)."



He added that additional events are being scheduled by Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. for the next 7 weeks and possibly even continuing it after that.

The next event is June 4 at Codey Arena in West Orange.
