WEST ORANGE, NJ - The Democratic county chairs of Essex, Passaic, Morris, and Sussex
counties on Jan. 16 announced their full support for Montclair resident Mikie Sherrill in the Democratic primary for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District.

In a statement, Chairman LeRoy Jones of Essex County said, “Mikie has shown through her
hard work and determination that she has what it takes to lead the 11th district. For years, the constituents of West Essex have had no voice in Washington and it is time we change that, which is why the municipal chairs and I voted unanimously to support Mikie Sherrill for Congress.”

Sherrill is a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy and serving for nearly a decade, Sherrill returned to the United States to earn a law degree from Georgetown University.

Sherrill later joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey, earning the position as an assistant U.S. Attorney, as a federal prosecutor. Sherrill lives in Montclair with her husband Jason Hedberg and their four children.

Chairman Chip Robinson of Morris County added, “I met Mikie after she announced in May and I have
watched her brick by brick build a grassroots campaign in Morris County. From her first volunteer meeting
in Parsippany in August to today, she is building the type of foundation we need in order to beat
Congressman Frelinghuysen in the fall. Supporting Mikie was not just my decision. I have heard it from all
corners of the 11th in Morris County. Elected officials, municipal chairs, and grassroots activists have all
said the same thing: ‘We want Mikie.’”

Speaking on behalf of Sussex County Democrats, Chairwoman Leslie Huhn said, “New Jersey’s 11th
Congressional District spans the political spectrum and here in Sussex County we need leaders who will
take the time to get to know and understand our communities. Mikie has proven she is willing to do just
that. With her background as a veteran and former federal prosecutor I know that in Washington we can
count on her to fight for what’s important to our communities, like Picatinny Arsenal as well as
infrastructure and transportation investment.”

Passaic County Chairman John Currie added, “Every once in awhile a newcomer comes along and makes you pay attention - that’s Mikie Sherrill. From her impressive background of service as a Naval helicopter pilot and a federal prosecutor, Mikie has the leadership qualifications to better represent residents and families in the 11th Congressional District.”

In response to the news, Sherrill said, “When I started this campaign in May, I did not know whether or not we could build a campaign strong enough to catch the attention and support of the Democratic leadership in the 11th district. This is why I am so honored today to receive the support from all four Democratic county chairs and municipal Democratic leaders. To beat Congressman Frelinghuysen and bring new leadership to this district, we will need everyone from our party leadership to our grassroots communities. I look forward to continuing to build a campaign that brings us together and make us all proud.”

The chairs reached their unanimous decision following a candidate screening and vote attended by the four county chairpersons and municipal and executive Democratic committee members and chairs. All declared Democratic candidates were given an opportunity to present their candidacies to the committee.

Attendees included Mikie Sherrill, Mitchell Cobert, and Tamara Harris Robinson.

New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District has quickly become one of the marquee races to take back the House Representatives in 2018. This is the first time that all four counties have come together early to mount a serious challenge to 22-year incumbent Congressman Frelinghuysen.
