Five Arrested in Attempted Totowa Car Dealership Heist

TOTOWA, NJ - Five men have been charged with allegedly attempting to steal several high end vehicles parked in a car dealership lot. The vehicles were located at the Otocity Car Dealership, located at 397 Union Blvd.

According to Totowa Police Chief Robert Coyle, on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at approximately 6 a.m., patrol units responded to a report of suspicious person in the car lot.

"Sgt. Jerry Tolomeo and Patrolmen Gary Potenzone, Joseph Flynn, and Robert Errigo were detailed to the dealership and observed at least five males fleeing in different directions from the burglary location that resulted in a foot chase by several of the officers," Coyle explained.

Police later found that the dealership office had been entered through a broken window in an apparent attempt to get the keys for the vehicles perked inside the lot, he added.

Demetrius Balmer, 19, Raequann Reid, 21, and Jorge Lopez, 19, all from Paterson, were arrested and later charged with burglary, conspiracy and resisting arrest.

"Neighboring police agencies - Woodland Park Police Department, Little Falls Police Department, Passaic County Sheriff's Department, New Jersey State Police and Palisades Interstate Parkway police - all had units at the scene assisting to form a perimeter around the site and aiding with the arrests," Coyle said.

Coyle also noted a 2006 Dodge Charger was later stopped and impounded for seizure. The occupants of that vehicle were arrested. Police did not identify the other two suspects.

Those charged and arrested are scheduled for a Passaic County Superior Court hearing on March 3.
