Gasoline prices rose and average of 40 cents in New Jersey than they did a week ago as the impact of Hurricane Harvey spreads across the country.

AAA Northeast reports that the  average price for a gallon of gasoline is 36 cents higher than a month ago ($2.43) and 79 cents higher than one year ago ($2.00). Nationally, the average price for a gallon of gas is $2.65, up 27 cents from last week ($2.38), 30 cents from a month ago ($2.35) and 45 cents from this same time last year. The survey was conducted Sept. 5.

“It’s important to remember that the high prices are not caused by gasoline supply, but by the ability to move the fuel from the Gulf coast to the eastern seaboard,” said Cathleen Lewis, director of public affairs and government relations for AAA Northeast. “As refineries come back online and the Colonial Pipeline resumes operations, those issues will eventually be resolved. We would hope and expect that these spikes are short term and prices will soon return to their traditional post-Labor Day levels.”
