Passaic County Plans Rally To Mark National Gun Violence Awareness Day

PATERSON, NJ - Passaic County Freeholder Director Sandi Lazzara has announced that the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders will hold a rally at William Bate Memorial Courthouse Plaza, in coordination with the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office and the Passaic County Education Association, to mark National Gun Violence Awareness Day. The rally will be held on Friday, June 2, and begin at 3 p.m.

Lazzara issued the following statement regarding the event:

“Our nation has fallen behind the rest of the developed world in our approach to gun violence. As a teacher, I was present when active shooter drills became as common place as fire drills in schools. Every day, our children are dealing with the reality of gun violence, but we are not seeing our lawmakers deal with that same reality.

It is disgraceful that our great nation is unable to create universal background checks and unable to create laws strong enough to keep mentally ill people and people with violent backgrounds from purchasing a firearm.

We are raising our children in a climate of fear in exchange for the freedom to own weapons and ammunition more powerful and more deadly than those used by our own police force.

The inability of our lawmakers to enact reasonable legislation to curb gun violence does not reflect the priorities of our country and its citizens, and it is our duty to stand in support of stronger legislation that keeps our neighbors and families safe.

On June 2nd, I will join wear orange in solidarity with my neighbors and family as we make our voices heard and call on our lawmakers to act, and I encourage everyone to do the same.”
