SOMERVILLE, NJ - A lengthy funeral procession with police honor guard and police cars from departments across New Jersey will make their way to the New Cemetery on South Bridge Street Wednesday where Piscataway police officer Julia Caseres, 28, will be buried.
A former soccer star at New Jersey City University, she was stricken with a rare form of lung cancer one year ago. She died on June 21. She had been a member of the Piscataway Police Department for three years.
The Piscataway Police Department shared a Facebook post on Saturday announcing her passing.
“It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our sister in blue, Julia Caseres,” said police. "In the few short years Julia was with us she impacted so many. Her beautiful smile and bubbly personality will surely be missed. Rest in peace sister.”
She was a resident of Clinton and formerly lived in Union.
Caseres holds the collegiate record for most goals scored - for both men and women - in the state of New Jersey during a four-year career at Rutgers/Newark and NJCU where she majored in criminal justice. She was a two-time Academic All-American and was selected to the national All-American Division Three soccer team.
She finished her soccer career with 100 goals and 42 assists.
The funeral is from the Galante Funeral Home, 2800 Morris Ave. Union on Wednesday June 26, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Church, 971 Suburban Road, Union at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at The New Cemetery in Somerville. There will be temporary road closures and detours to accommodate the procession, which is expected to arrive at the cemetery at 12:30 p.m.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Tuesday from 5-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
