ORADELL, NJ- Last Saturday morning, the Passaic Valley High School boys’ track team kicked off its season with a visit to Oradell to compete in the River Dell Season Opener Relays.
The varsity long jump team, consisting of Erick Alvarez, Kevin Lee, and Joseph Recalde, placed 6th, meanwhile the Novice Sprint Medley, consisted of Carmine Pelosi, Devin Diaz, Gabriel Disla and Mohammad Oudah, placed 5th.
“It was a big weekend for the first year track & field runners and jumpers. This was their first relay and meet they have ever competed in,” Coach Joel Thornton commented, “We had eight new faces we had to introduce to the sport Devin Diaz, Gabriel Disla, Anthony Forino, Santiago Hernandez, Pablo Arias, Anthony Vinci, Romel Moral and Joseph Recalde.”
This meet gave a preview for the Hornets for what type of competition they will face throughout the season and going into the state sectionals. Thornton hope that this meet would allow veteran athletes to know where they are in their section and allow them to get back into rhythm before the league meets.
“I was pleased with the performance of Erick Alvarez, Fernando Flores and Milos Miladinov. They all stepped out of their comfort zones and ran races they normally would never do such as Erick in the 400m and Fernando in the 1200m. Carmine Pelosi and Mohammed Oudah have stepped up into roles where they will have a huge impact on the team,” Thornton stated.
