TOTOWA - The Borough of Totowa Public Library Foundation, together with the Borough of Totowa Public Library are hosting its sixth annual Italian Family Style Dinner Fundraiser.

According to Anne Krautheim, Totowa Public Library director, the event is back by popular demand and helps to ensure that programs continue to be held during the year.

"It's a wonderful evening where the community gets together for great fun and camaraderie," she said. "But it's also directly supporting the foundation, which in turn uses the funds to cover the extras that's not necessarily included in our annual budget such as special programs, guest speakers and children's program, especially our summer reading program."

In the past year, the funds raised by the foundation also purchased new shelving for their media, Krautheim added.

"It was something we couldn't afford to purchase on our own at this time. This year's goal is to raise funds to replace 14-year-old carpeting in the main room," she said.

Additionally, Krautheim said that this year's event will celebrate the library's 60th anniversary.

"The official anniversary date is not until September but we felt that since we're getting together, we'll have a special presentation with cake to honor this milestone of serving the community," she noted.

The library was first established in 1957 and was located at 296 Union Blvd. The library moved to the current Totowa Road location in 1969.

"A lot of changes have take place since then," she reflected. "We've really become a community center in terms of providing a plethora of services to the community, in addition to our books and other materials. We're a meeting place and a center for lifelong learning for the residents of the community, young and old. We're also looking for way to improve by trying to bring new ideas in. We're always asking our patrons what they want."

Krautheim added that this coming year, the library will also offer art classes as well as meditation classes. Also planned are visits from many representatives of the county who will bring in pertinent information on various health issues.

"We're very grateful for over 60 years of support from the mayor and council. They've been behind us 100 percent and that's important," she said. "They've supported all of our endeavors and support our events. The library's board of trustees is very grateful for that relationship."

Currently, 120 tickets have been sold for the event and the goal is to sell 200 to make it a successful event.

"The foundation has worked very hard on this and they've provided so many volunteer hours. We hope to the community will come out to support it like they have in the years past," she explained. "Peter Lieberman is a wonderful entertainer and we'll have fun games, including a lot giveaways as well.

"It's really just a fun time," she noted. "It's after the holidays and people are still in the holiday spirit. We'll have some games and a small tricky-tray."

The event will take place on Monday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. at The Brownstone, 351 West Broadway in Paterson. Donation per person is $55. All proceeds will directly benefit the the Borough of Totowa Public Library. Beer, wine and soda is included. Entertainment will be provided by Peter Lieberman.
