The Alfred H. Baumann Free Public Library prides itself on outstanding customer service. With this in mind, I would like to update you on the current situation with the statewide delivery system, provided by LibraryLinkNJ (LLNJ) and funded by the New Jersey State Library.

LLNJ is required to rebid the delivery contract every three years. They chose a new delivery company and were confident that they would provide excellent service that our libraries and patrons expect. LLNJ worked diligently at putting procedures in place that would insure a smooth transition. Regrettably, due to unforeseen circumstances, there were issues out of their control that impeded the timeliness of deliveries, leaving an enormous backlog of materials that have yet to be delivered to libraries throughout the state.

Unfortunately, the northeast hub has been affected the most. Additionally, our library is getting hit hard due to the large volume of items on hold as well as the amount of items returning to our library shelves. This has been extremely frustrating and I apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused.

I would like to reassure you that we are doing everything possible on our end by swiftly reporting any delivery issues. The PALS Plus executive director has been in daily contact with LLNJ and has been keeping our library directors abreast of any new information. In turn, I am keeping our staff updated and we have been posting any new information on our library website and will begin providing updates on social media outlets. Any further action by our Library Board of Trustees is yet to be determined.

Here are some tips to help you get through the transition period:

  • Check Hoopla Digital and Overdrive for eBooks and audiobooks.
  • If we do not own a particular selection, please fill out one of our materials suggestion forms so we might consider purchasing the item for our collection.
  • Check with a staff member at the library to see if we have the item in storage or in a different edition or format.
  • Our librarians and staff are always available to recommend a title. There is nothing we dislike more than a reader without a book!

I understand your frustration and we are hoping that deliveries will get back to normal quickly. To help ease this rocky transition, we will be adding additional copies of our more popular selections to the collection. Furthermore, we are adding eBooks and audiobooks to enhance the Overdrive collection. The additional Overdrive selections will be dedicated for use by our patrons. Again, I apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused and thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

My door is always open and I welcome anyone to stop by the library, call, or email me if you have any questions or concerns.
