Washington's Encampment

WAYNE, NJ - The Dey Mansion is hosting an encampment in commemoration of Gen. George Washington's visit to the Preakness Valley.

During October of 1780, Gen. George Washington and his troops were encamped at the Dey Mansion, home of Col. Theunis Dey, as well as the surrounding area following a visit with the French Army. The Dey Mansion offered abundant food and a safe haven for the Continental Army.

Come and learn what life was like as a soldier during the American Revolution. Watch soldiers cleaning their muskets while women prepare meals. Some officers may be drilling with their men while others plan for battle or play cards. Special appearances will be made by New Jersey’s local militia. The day will be filled with 18th century games, music, demonstrations and crafters.

Self-guided tours of the mansion will be offered. Admission into the mansion will be $5 per person. Children, 11 years of age and under, are free. Parking and outdoor activities are free to the public.

On the Other Side of the Border

November 10, 2019

The children kept hugging us. They just wanted hugs. They wanted to be seen, to be loved, to feel safe. It’s odd — we teach our children to not talk to strangers, and yet when we entered the Shelter de Leona Vicario they ran to us, grabbed our hands, and wanted to play. My Spanish is limited and their English was non-existent, but they kept telling us their names and ...

'A Doll's House Part 2' Makes Timeless Claims at Summit Playhouse

SUMMIT, NJ – You wouldn’t think a follow-up to Henrik Ibsen’s play about Nora Helmer in 19th century Norway would be especially relevant today.

But the smart, funny sequel by Lucas Hnath has much to say about marriage, the cost of independence, abandoning one’s family and other issues that ring true. When Nora insists that marriage won’t exist in 20 or 30 years, ...

The production at The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey in Madison has held audiences ...

Thou Shalt Not - Production by Thinkery & Verse

On September 16, 1922, the bodies of an Episcopal priest, Edward Wheeler Hall and a member of his choir, Eleanor Reinhardt Mills, were discovered in a field near the New Brunswick-Franklin Township border. The bloody, butchered bodies obviously had been staged in the positions in which they were found. Torn love letters lay at the ...

Two Minus One Equals Zero?

This past August marked the seventh anniversary of my divorce. Growing up, just like most people, when I envisioned marriage, I saw the “they lived happily ever after” ending. Divorce was not in my frame of reference. My parents were married 56 years at the time of my father’s passing, and my grandparents made it to 72 years. They were my role models of what was to be – ...

Three Steps to Building Self Confidence

How we feel about ourselves dictates the way we live life. It impacts the way we approach just about every thing we do. Yet, sadly, many people struggle to believe in their worth and abilities.

Throughout my life, my levels of self-confidence have ebbed and flowed. Growing up I was an overweight adolescent, which had a significant affect on how I viewed myself. When you’re young, ...

To the Editor,

Fall is on the way, which means the leaves will soon be changing.

As an Essex County resident who commutes into Manhattan every day, I know the travail of the trains all too well – as do all of my neighbors. Overcrowding at Penn, “train ...
