WAYNE, NJ – Swedish medical device company Getinge has agreed to a lease at the old Toys’R’Us world headquarters in Wayne.
Many have speculated what would happen to the huge property on the edge of the Point View Reservoir in northern Wayne. It was mentioned as a possible site for a multi-unit housing development to help fulfil the Township’s affordable housing obligations.
However, at the public Mt. Laurel informational meeting held early this year, Brian Chewcaskie, one of the attorneys representing Wayne in its affordable housing lawsuits said that the owner of the site (Dobco, Inc.) has no concrete plans for its development.
The old Toys’R’Us headquarters building at 1 Geoffrey Way will clearly remain a commercial building.
Getinge, according to their website, is “a leading global provider of products and systems that contribute to quality enhancement and cost efficiency within healthcare and life sciences.”
Their plans for this property is part of a consolidation of Getinge’s three New Jersey facilities located in Wayne, Mahwah and Fairfield. Their Fairfield location will be closed, they will move their current Wayne facility to this new location, and they will end up with two primary locations in Wayne and Mahwah.
Wayne Mayor Chris Vergano said: “I’m happy that Getinge is expanding their footprint in Wayne. This will increase the number of jobs here and help our existing retail and dining businesses as well.”
They are developing 44,000 square feet of the existing building to create a modern, state-of-the-art work environment and host 200 employees.
What will happen to the rest of the Toys’R’Us property? Only time will tell.
