WAYNE, NJ – Online shopping has grown in leaps and bounds since the pandemic hit and packages left on front porches have become a common target for thieves. Two suspected package thieves were caught by Wayne Police recently after one theft was caught on camera.

Wayne police officers responded to a report of a Wayne township resident who had multiple packages stolen from their porch on Tuesday, October 13.

“This incident was captured on home surveillance video which depicted a white Honda Pilot SUV driving in the area while one female suspect approached the home and took the packages,” said Detective Captain Dan Daly of the Wayne Police Department.

On Thursday, October 15, a Wayne patrol officer found a white Honda Pilot parked in the lot of a local hotel. “Upon checking the area, that officer located boxes that were consistent with those that were stolen from the aforementioned home,” said Daly.

Among those stolen package boxes, Wayne Police found another address and officers were sent to the second home where they discovered that the resident there was also a victim of theft, but the resident hadn’t been aware. They thought their package hadn’t been delivered yet.

Wayne Police Detectives responded to the hotel to continue their investigation and located one suspect, and identified a second. They searched the suspect’s homes and the white Honda Pilot and found several items from both package theft incidents.

“Suspect Enid Gonzalez was taken into custody at the hotel and transported to the Wayne Township Police Department for processing and follow-up investigation,” Daly said. “Later in the day on October 15, Claribel Duran voluntarily surrendered to the Wayne Police Department and was processed.”

According to Daly, Gonzalez, age 30, was charged with two counts of Theft of Movable Property and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Theft. Duran, age 33, was charged with one count of Theft of Movable Property and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Theft.

“Both suspects are Wayne residents and were released from Wayne Police Headquarters pending their court appearances, in accordance with bail reform guidelines,” Daly added. “The charges against both are merely accusations, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
