PATERSON, NJ - A 17-year-old city youth was in stable condition Sunday morning at St. Joseph's Medical Center after being wounded in the left leg by a single gunshot at 3:33 a.m.

The incident occurred on Park Avenue between East 24th and East 25th streets, according to Lt. Patrick Murray.

"The victim ...was attending a party at a residence on Park Avenue and was outside when several armed males began shooting, at which time the victim was struck. The victim was transported for treatment by friends and is currently in stable condition," Murray said.

"The motive for the incident is still under investigation at this time, but may have to do with a group being denied entry to the party earlier in the evening," Murray reported. "A 21-year-old male who was thought to be struck by gunfire was determined to have an injury to the eye that may have been caused by glass or other debris.

It was the second overnight shooting incident reported in the city. About two hours prior, an off-duty Essex County Deputy Sheriff and a 22-year-old Hispanic male were shot outside 247 Straight St. That incident is also under investigation.

Anyone with information on the incident can contact Detective Rolando Polio or Detective Edgar Taylor of the Ceasefire Unit at 973-321-1342 or the anonymous Tips line at 973-523-TIPS.
