PATERSON, NJ – The Senate and Assembly races in the 35th legislative district feature offer voters a chance to pick among candidates with some stark ideological differences.
In the Senate contest, Democratic Assemblywoman Nellie Pou is running against former Haledon mayor Ken Pengitore.
The Assembly race pits Democrats Benjie Wimberly, a city councilman, and Shavonda Sumter, who managed Jeffrey Jones’ successful mayoral campaign, against Republicans William Connolly, a life-time Patersonian, and North Haledon Councilwoman Donna Puglisi.
In a district dominated by Paterson’s Democratic voters, Pou, Wimberly and Sumter loom as formidable favorites.
The candidates also have divergent opinions on what should be done to solve the area’s chronic flooding problems, according to a story on northjersey.com.
