PATERSON, NJ - A fire that swept through a building in Paterson’s downtown is under investigation after it left 50 residents displaced, 19 apartments damaged, and six businesses closed, according to Fire Chief Brian McDermott.

The American Red Cross was on the scene to provide shelter for those impacted, a task that would be handled with social distancing measures brought on by COVID-19, Mayor Andre Sayegh confirmed.

The four alarm blaze at 40 Cianci Street was first reported at 1:06 p.m. and also drew a response from the Passaic and Clifton Fire Departments. One firefighter and one resident sustained minor injuries.
