PATERSON, NJ – Inspiring teenagers to get out of bed early on a Saturday morning is no easy task, but for 70 Paterson female students, the 4th Annual Teen Empowerment and Enrichment Network (TEEN) Summit at Oasis - A Haven for Women and Children, proved worthy of setting the alarm.
The TEEN Summit, held on October 19, opened with Keynote Speaker Secretary of State Tahesha Way’s calls for youth civic engagement, as well as a college and career fair attended by local universities and representatives from Sisters of the Brotherhood.
“The annual Teen Girls Summit empowers and inspires young women in our community,” said Jennifer Brady, Executive Director of Oasis. “This year the girls were able to learn about activism and really engage in the change that they hope to see in Paterson.
Using a panel format, guest speakers shared motivating messages about the grit and self-love that have guided them on their career paths in the medical and arts industries. “The best part of today’s program was finding the courage in myself that I never had, after hearing each of the speaker’s stories” said Kamoye, a HARP Academy student.
A closing breakout session enabled students to participate as activists in their choice of causes including the March for Our Lives, DACA, and Me Too movements. Jhelibanny, an International High School student told TAPinto Paterson that felt most impacted by “seeing different people with different careers find a common thing to come together for.”
Oasis is currently registering women for weekly adult education classes as well as Saturday programming for youth and adults including SAT/ACT, GED, ESL, photography, cooking, guitar, sewing, crochet, dance and art at their 59 Mill Street location. Students are invited to register for their TEEN program which includes college readiness, activism, internship, and a variety of other opportunities.
