Apr. 6: Count Basie Orchestra at WPU

WAYNE, NJ - William Count Basie, a native of Red Bank, New Jersey, started the Count Basie Orchestra in 1935 and created the big band phenomenon that is still going strong in 2013.  Since Basie's passing in 1984, Thad Jones (William Paterson University's first appointed Jazz Studies Program Director), Frank Foster, Grover Mitchell, Biull Hughes and now Dennis Mackrel have led the orchestra and maintained it as one of the elite performing organizations in jazz.  Winning more awards than any other jazz big band, the Count Basie Orchestra is the most "Swingingest Band in All the Land."

The orchestra will be performing on April 6 at 8 pm at William Paterson University’s Shea Center for Performing Arts.
