PATERSON, NJ- An overnight five alarm fire at 268 Main Street led to the collapse of one building and caused significant damage to another.
The Paterson Fire Department was dispatched to the three-story building which contained a Boost Mobile Store and housed apartments above, at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Heavy smoke was visible upon arrival with firefighters gaining entry and locating the fire in the basement. While hoses were stretched responding crews were forced to retreat as the fire and smoke intensified, travelling through the walls.
While the fire was not visible from the outside, the heavy smoke continued and crews worked to protect neighboring structures. At approximately 2:00 a.m. a cracking sound was heard and the building where the fire was originally reported collapsed.
Firefighters from Paterson and other neighboring towns remained on the scene throughout the night and into Tuesday morning as crews continued to work.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
