PATERSON, NJ – The City Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on Paterson’s preliminary 2013 budget on Tuesday at 7 pm at City Hall.
The hearing originally was scheduled for Tuesday, but was postponed.
The $235 million preliminary budget would produce a 9.9 percent tax increase, but that exceeds the state’s new limit on such hikes. State law allows no more than a 3.5 percent increase. So the city must make another $8.5 million in budget adjustments before adopting the spending plan.
One way city officials are considering trimming the budget is imposing additional layoffs of municipal workers.
